Civil War Grouping of James Johnston, C. H 144th New York Vol. Inf. The grouping includes his .58 caliber ctg. box with oval US plate. Box in very good complete sound condition, just some crazing on the finish, latch tab torn but present, includes original tins. Nicely marked on the inside flap "Baker & McKenney N. Y.", also marked with "A / 4" on the front flap beneath the plate, which is about perfect. Also, his excellent condition M1858 smooth side canteen. The brown wool cover really excellent with no holes or seam openings, original linen sling also excellent just showing heavy honest use. The bottom portion of the sling is actually stitched to the canteen cover and a small hand carved wooden plug/ stopper is tied into one of the knots, while the canteen still includes its original stopper and chain. The initials "JW" are scratched on the pewter spout, doubtless a previous or subsequent owner. Very nice canteen with lots of character.

Additionally, there is a group of ten Civil War period documents pertaining to the 144th, most of them pertaining to or, in some cases signed by Johnston. Primarily detailed muster rolls and ordnance returns. One muster roll with old tape reinforcing at seams, the others all excellent. Johnston enlisted with the 144th on August 11, 1862, and served with the regiment until muster out June 25, 1865, including the actions at Ft. Wagner and James Island, South Carolina where Johnston was wounded. Nice identified grouping.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
