    Description

Civil War Flag Attributed to Jabez Loane of Baltimore. 35-star flag (June 20, 1863 to October 31, 1864) measuring 93" x 70". It is made of wool bunting. The stars are arranged in a pleasing medallion pattern. It is machine-stitched except for the right hem and the applied stars, and has one brass grommet on the canvas hoist which is inscribed "Jordan". There are two tears by the hoist and three repairs along the right side. It was found in Baltimore, folded up in a trunk that also contained two samplers by the Jordan sisters of that city. The sisters likely made the repairs seen on this flag which we attribute to Jabez Loane of Baltimore. The company is still in business (as Loane Brothers, Inc.) after nearly 200 years and is located in Towson, Maryland. They retain a similar 35-flag displayed in their office lobby. Though larger, that flag shares characteristics of construction with ours (the canton being pieced together with three panels of fabric, chain stitching in the hoist, use of brass grommets). Theirs is marked with an ink stencil signifying the manufacturer, but labels were also used. Given the dimensions, these may have seen use as garrison flags.
