Description

Civil War Era Confederate Wooden Soled Shoes. Hand carved wooden sole and leather upper attached with nails. Iron heel and toe plates attached to bottom of sole with large nails. Three un-reinforced eyelets for the laces. Wooden soled shoes were used by soldiers during the Crimean War where several versions were experimented with and used. An example of a similar shoe in the North Carolina Museum of History refers to them as "slave shoes". It is known that the South also imported wooden-soled shoes from Europe late in the war when leather and wood for soles was in short supply. Using wood for the soles conserved the leather for other uses.

Condition: Very good. One shoe missing the iron heel plate. Leather dry and scuffed but still remarkably supple.
