Civil War Era 36-Star Flag. This 50" x 73" loosely-spun cotton flag has 36 stars in an unusual shield pattern, aligned horizontally, or east-to-west. The stripes and stars are all assembled using hand-stitching. There were 36 states in the Union from October 31, 1864 to March 1, 1867, so this example may well have seen use in the Civil War. There are two brass grommets attached to the hoist which is made of a burlap-type material. There are two tiny repair patches adjacent to the hoist and some areas of minor wear, primarily at the corners. A portion of cord is still attached to one of the grommets, indicating that the flag may have been strung across a street and hung vertically, as was the custom for patriotic parades and military reviews. The overall condition is quite nice. There is no maker's name.
