    Description

Civil War Confederate Military Pass for Poetess Cornelia J. M. Jordan, Signed by Her Brother-in-Law Adjutant General Thomas Jordan. 8 x 4 ¼-inches, on Head Quarters 1st Corps Army of the Potomac letterhead, Fairfax, Virginia, October 14, 1861. It reads in full: "Fairfax C.H. Octo. 14th 1861 / Mrs Cornelia J. M. Jordan and servant are, / authorized to pass the lines of this Army Corps / to these Head Quarters without molestation or / hindrance. / By Command Gen'l Beauregard / T. Jordan / A.A. Gen'l". The pass is also docketed on the reverse: "Passport for Mrs Jordan & Svt / c/o / Gen'l Beauregard / Hd Qrs".
Thomas Jordan (1819-1895) graduated West Point in 1840 and served with the U.S. army during the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American Wars. As early as 1860 he set up a pro-Southern spy network in Washington, D.C. He resigned from the army in May, 1861 and was commissioned a captain in the fledgling Confederate army. He was Beauregard's chief of staff and served in my important engagements during the war, most notably Shiloh. His brother Francis H. Jordan also served on his staff. It is for his brother's wife that this pass was granted. Cornelia Jordan was a poetess who initially had pro-Union sympathies, but by war's end her poetry had a more pro-Southern flair.

Condition: Very good. With old, smoothed fold creases and some browning along the left and top edges.
