Civil War Cavalry Officer's Trousers Attributed to 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry Captain. This scarce pair of regulation trousers was worn by Captain William M. Shriver, Co. H, 9th Pa. Vol. Cavalry. The dark blue wool body has the classic high back and narrow waistband with a small inset watch pocket and all six suspender buttons. The vented back is adjusted by a small belt and each hip pocket closes by means of a small, cloth covered button. All three original buttons remain on the fly. As per regulations, the outside seam of each leg is welted from waistband to cuff with a narrow yellow stripe denoting an officer of cavalry. Inside each cuff there are buttons designed to hold a strap that would pass under the boot. The interior waist is lined with white polished cotton and is sound, showing period use. Overall, these well made trousers are very sound and have scattered minor moth damage with a few larger holes around the seat, most of which could be backed and made imperceptible, and fraying to sections of the yellow welting.

The trousers were part of a larger grouping of Shriver's material that came to light from his estate more than twenty-five years ago and which included a relic condition frock coat and fullstanding quarter plate image of him, all of which now reside in other collections. Shriver enlisted as a 1st Lt. in the 9th Pa. Cav. in June 1862, became Captain of Co. H in May 1863, and resigned in November of that year after being heavily engaged in actions in Kentucky and Tennessee. A difficult uniform item to find, particularly with the connection to a brave officer.
