Well we done a great deal of damage to the Rebels. We destroyed the Railroad for several miles. On Christmas night we charged into a little town on the Railroad about eleven o'clock and drive the Rebels out. We burnt the town and all of the Rebels commissary and Quarter masters stores. A large amount of ammunition besides serval stands of small arms and several wagons that they captured....my brave boys and you think we would stand back no we took off our hats and started off on a yell, my horse was shot threw the right hind leg....". February 14, 1864, Camp Near Culpeper, Va...."We had a little raid down to the rapadan river the other day but was not in engagement. The Second Corps lost a few men. I can't tell what it may done for we have a great deal of picket duty to do and a great ways to walk but that is much better than marching....", Signed Alva C. Hadley

March 25, 1864, Camp Gierson Near Memphis, Tenn...."I want you to write and tell me what the Butler thinks about this last call for two hundred thousand more men and what they think of the draft....". Signed Wm. H. Gay

June 17, 1864, Quarter Masters Office, Big Shanty, Ga...."We have been laying here six or seven days. We had a very hard march in getting here and are having hard times here yet. We have been fighting ever since we came here. This evening we opened out with all our artillery on this part of the line. They soon stopped the Reb's sharp shooting and all was quiet. Saw the booming of our artillery the enemy did not fire a shot. We are within two or four hundred yards of the reb's works. Can throw shell into their works just as we want them. We have quite a bit of splendid guns while the enemy are worthless. They can only get on occasion solid shot to us. They do well with their small arms....". Signed W.D. Smith

July 6, 1864, Near Petersburg Va...."We have been doing some more hard fighting perhaps you have heard more about it....we crossed the James River on the 17th of June and made a forest march at night on the 18th. We made a charge on the reb's works....I received a slight wound in the left arm but was not disabled, a few days later we fell back and made our line of works 300 yards from theirs. I tell you the little bullets flew and they would send a big one....". Signed Alva C. Hadley

April 14, (n/y), Edenburg, Va...."The same news yet, we are still in sight of the Rebels and still fighting everyday though it is mostly artillery today. There has been some musketry....". Signed E. H. Hunt
