    Description

Civil War .54 Caliber Percussion Burnside Breechloading Cavalry Carbine with Great Period ID to David Birks, Co. C, 14th Penna. Cav. The receiver is #13219 and the breech block #13358, a classic "campfire mismatch" that occurred when soldiers were clustered together, dismantling and cleaning their weapons, with no regard for matching serial numbers when they were reassembled. All metal smooth and gray, untouched, with no rust or pitting. Mechanically fine, very good bore. The wood shows honest heavy use with scattered dents and dark untouched patina. Neatly, but primitively, carved in two lines on the right side of the butt stock, "DAVID BIRKS/ (th) E 14 PA CA". Absolutely authentic with patina and wear consistent with the rest of the stock. Birks enlisted in the 14th Penna. Cav. on February 29, 1864, and was discharged for disability May 18,1865, Birks after being wounded by 'friendly fire' while "in line of battle at Martinsburg, Va. Aug. 3d,1864". Accompanied by complete set of records. A very scarce ID'd Civil War cavalry carbine with a most unusual history.
