Civil War 35 Star US Garrison Flag 1863 - 1865. The flag is now 98" X 15' with a portion of the lower red stripe and the hoist having been removed, obviously during the period of use. Constructed entirely of a single layer of wool bunting, with reinforcing at the corners. The stars are 6" across with two stars missing on one side, with one star replaced, during the period, and one missing on the other side. The 2 3/4" canvas hoist is stenciled on one end "15 Feet Long" with a spread wing eagle, and on the other Horstm(ann) / Philade(lphia) where the portion of the stripe and hoist was removed, along with one of the brass grommets. Retains eight of the original 1", evenly spaced, brass grommets. The grommets are unique to these Horstmann flags and were used by Horstmann because of their ready access to button making machinery which was easily modified to produce these grommets, which begin appearing on Horstmann flags in 1863. Flag has seen considerable use with a number of small and a few larger holes/tears, along with several old repairs. Obviously hung from a fort based on the size, and the fact that Horstmann was apparently supplying these flags to the Federal government on contract. Nice Civil War flag, loaded with character and would serve nicely as the backdrop to a Civil War collection, as used by the previous owner.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
