Cased Set of Civil War Epaulettes Identified to Colonel, Later Brigadier General, James Voty Bomford, 8th US Infantry. This is the exact set of epaulettes shown on page 94 of William C. Davis's book Commanders of the Civil War. Velvet lined, japanned, tin case excellent, with no dents and retaining most of the original finish, just one hinge separated, easily repaired. The epaulettes are in very good condition, showing honest wear, with some separation of the coiled brass wire on the edge of the boards, minor. Gilt brass crescents, the fringe a rather narrow gauge, indicating early war production. Brigadier general's star and blue silk pad with silver bullion border and "8", on each board, screw off eagle buttons. Brass bars on the underside marked right and left for attachment. The underside of the boards are red Moroccan leather, with red silk lining on the pads. Again, showing honest wear and use, with some of the silk worn through to the padding but very good. The complete set is untouched. Graduating from West Point in 1828 and brevetted for gallantry at Contreras, Churubusco and Molino del Rey during the Mexican, Bomford was Lt. Col. of the 8th Inf. at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was brevetted to Col. for action at Perryville, Kentucky. October 8, 1862 and to Brig. Gen. on March 13, 1865. Nice set of Civil War epaulettes with a great history.
