    Description

Bronze Ft. Sumter Medal in the Original Presentation Case. This is a particularly interesting and historic example of this rare medal as it is inscribed on the edge to Francis J. Oakes who is credited with firing the first return shot from the fort after the commencement of the Confederate bombardment. This is the third class medal with a bust of Major Anderson on the face and a depiction of Peter Hart raising the flag over the burning fort on the reverse. Cpl. Francis J. Oakes enlisted in the 1st US Light Artillery, Battery E on November 9, 1858. He was subsequently promoted to sergeant and 1st sergeant serving in various capacities for the remainder of the war mustering out on May 1, 1866. The original storage case, with pebbled leather over a wood frame is in good sound condition with 10% flaking. The interior portion of the case that frames the medal is lined with blue velvet, the lid in blue silk. The section that frames the medal can be removed to display the medal. The condition of the medal itself is perfect. Ordered by the New York Chamber of Commerce on June 6, 1861, to honor the defenders of the fort, the medals were finally presented in June of 1862. One of the rarest and most desirable of the sanctioned Civil War military medals, with this specific example holding considerable historic significance.
