Brady/ Washington Carte de Visite of Henry N. Francis of the 21st New York Infantry. Ink script presentation from Francis on the verso, "Presented to Mr. Wm Thompson/ By His Nephew/ Henry N. Francis/ Upton Hill, Md. Oct 1st 1861." Francis enlisted in the 21st at the age of 19 on May 1, 1861, and served with the regiment through the Seven Days and Antietam battles, before his discharge for disability on December 3, 1862. Francis is pictured in New York state shell jacket, with SNY buckle, M1842 musket and regulation eagle drum on the ground at his side, with drum sling laying on top, the implication obviously being that Francis served as a drummer. Just some even fading and corners rounded for insertion in an album. Great CDV portrait.
