BRADY ALBUMEN IDENTIFIED AS PHILIP H SHERIDAN AND STAFF. This wonderful albumen presents a view of Gen. Philip Sheridan and his generals in front of their tent. The other generals identified in this picture are from left to right (standing) Gen. Alfred Gibbs, (seated) David Greg, (standing) Sheridan, seated) Wesley Merritt,(standing) Alfred Thomas Arkamedis Torbert and (seated) James H. Wilson. This photo was possibly taken in the Spring or Fall of 1864 as by the next year Greg had resigned his commission. There are two green 3 cent Washington tax stamps with the name " Brady" stamped across them on verso. This piece is 8 ½ inches by 6 ½ inches with original oval matting setting off this image. Each General is noted by a pin marking his position in the picture and his name except Gibbs, although it may have been there at one time, it appears as a faint pencil marking. The inscription on the top border reads "all generals" None of the writing goes into the picture and was done possibly at the time. Of these generals other than Sheridan himself, Wilson and Torbert emerged as two who served the Union very well. Wilson , who was responsible for capturing Selma, Montgomery, Columbus and Macon, was also the capture of Jefferson Davis , the President of the Confederacy himself. Whereas, Alfred Thomas Arkamedis Torbert not only had a colorful name but also an impressive career , he was given brevetted rank of Major General in 1864. This photo is bold in image and exceptional in condition. The fact that it is a marked "Brady" makes it a remarkable piece.
