Beautiful Hand Crafted Silver Mounted American Slant Top Lap desk Used in the Civil War by John S. Peckham 7th Vermont Infantry. 12 1/4" X 15 1/4" X 3" high at the front rising to 5 1/2" high at the back. Hand crafted entirely of walnut with all corners finely dovetailed. The lid, which constitutes the writing surface, lifts up to reveal a storage compartment for paper etc. Steel strap hinges, each corner inlaid with an engraved silver leaf, and inlaid silver lock escutcheon with a Masonic symbol engraved on the small sliding closure door. Edges of the lid also decorated with small round head steel tacks. There is some age shrinkage/separation at the joints of the three pieces used to construct the lid but very sound. The small top compartment, with a lock escutcheon inside composed of two silver inlaid hearts, is revealed when the writing surface lid is lifted. Both compartments still retain their original keys and the locks work fine. Inlaid on the lid of the small top compartment is a great primitive silver eagle holding a letter in its beak and bearing the inscription "John S. Peckham / Burlington / Vt." Peckham enlisted in Co. G of the 7th Vermont on 12/3/63 and mustered out 3/14/66. Interestingly inlaid on the underside of the writing surface lid is an 1866 US five cent piece. The top compartment contains a pottery inkwell, period wooden ink pen, and a ninth plate tintype of Peckham in nine button frock coat with period ink script ID in the back. The desk overall exhibits a few other minor age hairline cracks, but no loss and none affecting soundness. Overall very attractive, with nice rich patina, and a most unusual and wonderfully ID'd piece of Civil War memorabilia.
