    Battle of the Crater Letter from Union Cavalryman. 4-page letter written on bifolium stationery, Camp of 1st N.J. Cavalry[ near City Point], August 4, 1864 from A. B. Tompkins to his sister. "... we have had two big fites one at Malvern Hill where we lost six men out of our company... I can not say it was fun to fite, but I really did like it fore to see them run. it was fun. they was a loosing every think... they [the dead] lay pretty thick fore we run over them as we went a long the more of them the maryer... Genl Grant has been tareying the ground up under the rebbels. we was about eight miles from the place when it exploded. I could feel the ground tremble under us we did not know what was going on... You wanted to know weather my girl was crying. I do not know fore she has give me the sack. I will have to hunt a nother one up."
