Description
Battle of Gettysburg: Flag Fragment Relic.13.5" x 15.5" ornate Victorian frame housing an 1888 Typed Letter Signed [TLS] from Republican presidential candidate Benjamin Harrison, a 1908 campaign handout for Leo G. Cyphert (Union veteran) and a 3" x 1.25" piece of flag with fringe. Harrison's letter to Cyphert reads: "Your favor of the 26th inst. has been received. Please accept my thanks for your kindness." Apparently, Cyphert sent Harrison a piece of the flag and then took his response, added another piece along with the campaign card, and had it framed. A letter of provenance is glued to the wooden back board. Dated November 7th 1909, it reads: "The below happened July the 2nd 1863 at Gettysburgh. Presented to Leon H. Johnson by Leo G. Cyphert of Co. C 104 Reg. Pa Volunteers. This picture and frame as a token of friendship hoping you will always keep it and remember what that little piece of Flag means. That flag had eleven color bearers kill'd besides Isac F. Dunston a Lieutenant that picked the flag up afer the Coller bearers was killed and a few minutes later in the Peach Orchard he to fell mortal wounded and while carying the flag a piece was shot off the flag staff and he picked it up and put it in his pocket. He gave it to his sister & requested her to take it home and give a piece each of his comrades. This piece I got from his sister Mrs. William Hay of State St. Durber [?]. L. G. Cyphert".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
