    Description

Battle of Cumberland Gap Letter. 4-page letter written in pencil on lined patriotic stationery, Cumberland Ford, May 18, 1864, from William to his wife and family. "The new tents are what is called the Sibley tent. They are quite round and high tapering to a point at the top... There are now 24 guns here at the ford divided into four batteries. The guns are mostly of the Parret Pattron Rifled are the best in use. In addition there is an infantry force of ten regiments and one brigade under General Spears in on the other wise of the river... We will drive the rebels out of the gap in short time. It may be a hard battle... I guess that General Morgan will try and shell them out with those heavy cannon... let us be put in front or rear we all expect to do our duty and not bring a reproach on the State of Ohio."
