Battle of Cold Harbor Letter with Reference to Battle of the Crater. 4-page letter written on bifolium stationery, Cold Harbor, June 13, 1864 from John T. Endy to Oley June. "You probably hear a good deal of reports but they are greatly exaggerated. You probably have also heard of the Rebs stripping our dead. That is true. I saw that at the battle of Spotsylvania. The Rebels are in a better condition this year than they were before. We also had to fight Beauregard Legions and the Richmond Home Guards but they amount to a trifle.. But they say Grant was a match for Lee. But we lost a good General, Sedgwick... We have our advanced pits about 80 yards from the Rebs. At the 2nd corps they were at work digging a tunnel to blow up a Rebel fort but they are not done yet."

The reference to digging a tunnel relates to the 12-day Battle of Cold Harbor and not the Battle of the Crater which occurred later at Petersburg. This earlier project at the McGhee Farm was not completed and remains a little known aspect of Cold Harbor.
