Written phonetically, but clearly, the young soldier pens his letter from Chattanooga where the Army of the Cumberland was nearly besieged after the difficult fight at Chickamauga. In part: "...we have had a very hard fite here and the Rebs rather got the better of us such we had to foal back on Chattanuga after three dayes hard fiting but I guess that thay lost as many men as we did. our rigment made a ba net carge on a hole bregaid of rebels and thay took more prisners than thare of us and old King got on a stump and holared hurrah for the Ohio boys and he was shot ded by a rebel sharp shooter. The rebels will stand and fite mitey well till we fix ba netes and start tordes them and thay cant stand that... the pickets fites every nite. this has bin as harde afite as we has had and I spect that we will have a harder one before it is over."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
