    Description

    Austrian Model 1854 Lorenz .58 Caliber Rifled Musket With Inscribed Plaque "Jas H. Cooke to Chas H. Cooke Antietam Md. 18th Oct 1862". All metal light gray with scattered dark staining. Lock marked 858 and J Heitzenberger on top of the barrel at the breech, along with Austrian proofs / numbers on various parts. Mechanically perfect, excellent bore. Wood very good with dark patina, just a few scattered dents and scratches. Butt stock exhibits a 1" X 2 3/4" metal plaque inscribed in fine script " Jas H. Cooke to Chas H. Cooke Antietam Md. 18th Oct. 1862", affixed with two screws.

    James H. Cooke a private in Company G 14th Indiana Infantry mustered in on 6/7/1861 and was discharged for disability 4/30/1863, later serving with the 4th U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry. Included is an extensive file outlining the history of the 14th Indiana Infantry and information concerning Charles H. Cooke, private in Company F 16th Mass Infantry.
