    Description

    ARMY FORGE SCENE, IN FRONT OF PETERSBURG (No. 77). Under the glaring sun, a blacksmith hammers a horseshoe while another works the forge's bellows and a Contraband steadies a horse. Other soldiers stand in the background and in the shadows of a shelter covered in withered pine branches. Mount measures 13 by 10.5 inches and the image 9 by 7 inches, slightly loose at the lower left corner and with a tiny chip on the lower right edge. Dated 1865 and noted "Negative by David Knox" and "Positive by A. Gardner..." along with the date taken: "August, 1864."
