Archive of Civil War Letters From Union Captain James F. Grimes With Battle Content. Seven letters, four pages each, 5" x 8", written from camps at Bealton Station, Catletts Station, Nokesville, Virginia and Washington, D. C., with dates ranging from December, 1863 to May, 1864, to "Sarah" [Sarah A. Jones]. Available documentation reveals that James F. Grimes was a Union soldier of the 17th U.S. Infantry from Hillsboro, New Hampshire, who enlisted as a captain on August 5, 1861. He was later promoted to second in command of his regiment as Acting Lt. Colonel. He survived the war and remained in the army until 1870. These letters, written to who may have been his future wife, speak of casualties in his regiment: "Since the Company has been organized it has had in all 139 members of which 88 have been killed or have deserted. At the present I carry 71 names on the muster...", courts martial, the execution of a deserter: "The prisoner (John McNams) was about twenty four years old...the execusion [sic] took place about 2 o'clock P.M. After which we returned to our camp as you may suppose not very cheerful...", fighting guerrillas and trivial matters like the weather and general camp life. Each letter has the usual fold creases but is bright, clear and in fine condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
