    Johnston exhorts his troops

Albert Sidney Johnston: 1862 General Orders. A 5.5" x 7.5" handbill or circular, printed on two sides, containing the text of "General Orders No. 21, Headquarters, Department of Northern Virginia. February 4, 1862." Johnston recalls the glorious victory on the "plains of Manassas" and urges his men to reenlist so the great fight may continue and the North be vanquished once and for all. He accuses the North of trying to "... establish his dominion over our people by the widespread havoc of a war inaugurated without the shadow of constitutional right, and prosecuted in a spirit of ruthless vengeance..." At this time, the North had achieved few, if any, victories, but two days later Grant took Forts Henry and Donelson. On April 6th, Johnston would receive a fatal wound at Pittsburg Landing or Shiloh, one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict.
