    Description

Absolutely Unique Battlefield Excavated Confederate Artifact. Crescent shaped brass stencil with iron frame on the obverse, 16" x 10" high. Excavated on the Confederate defense line, now identified as "Confederate Ave." at Vicksburg. "J. B. Tucker No." in 2" high letters. A number of bend and a couple of cracks on the letters but excellent complete relic condition. Captain John B. Tucker John B. Tucker raised "Tucker's Company" of Mississippi Cavalry in Monroe County in early 1862, subsequently becoming Co. H of the 28th Mississippi Cavalry. The company, and Tucker, served with the regiment to the end of the war, including action in and around Vicksburg. In 1864, the regiment became part of Nathan Bedford Forrest's command and was engaged at Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Franklin. Certainly a most unusual Civil War artifact, doubtless carried into military service by Tucker.
