Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Commission. 15.5" X 19.5", classic form with eagle masthead at top, arms/flags panoply at the bottom, partially printed on vellum and completed in ink script. The signatures of both Lincoln and Secretary of War Stanton are bright and crisp. The document is overall in near perfect condition, with just one tiny hole above, but not touching, the Stanton signature, and showing folds. Dated March 4, 1864 commissioning John W. Acheson as "Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain" with his date of rank listed as February 29th 1864.
Acheson enlisted from Washington, Pa. on 11/14/61, as a 24 year old private in the 85th Pennsylvania Vols. The 85th saw heavy fighting throughout Acheson's term of service, and he rose through the ranks to 1st Lieut. on 8/2/62. He was discharged from the 85th for this promotion to Captain on 2/29/64. Interestingly Acheson was subsequently wounded in action at Jonesboro, Ga. on 9/1/64. He became a physician after the war. The commission is archivally framed and matted. Very fine example of this most desirable Civil War document, with beautiful Lincoln signature.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
