About Mint Edward Barnes "The Americans Choice" Bowie Knife and Sheath with Provenance to Captain George Baldwin 15th Mass Vol. Inf. The knife is visually stunning and is 12 1/2" overall. The elaborate cutlery style handle is about perfect, while the magnificent etched blade is about mint, with just a few tiny, really negligible stains. Obverse of the blade with 90% etched coverage including "The Americans Choice", eagle surmounting American shield with arrows, caduceus etc. and "Manufactured / By / Edward Barnes / & Sons / Sheffield". A large block US with five pointed star between the letters on the ricasso. Reverse of the blade plain, retaining 98% of the original mint luster. Brown Moroccan leather covered sheath with gilt decoration including the same US with star as is on the ricasso on the face. German silver throat and tip, the frog stud missing from the throat. Sheath near perfect with just some minor scuffs on the edges. Included is a carte-de-visite of Capt. Baldwin by a New Haven, Conn. photographer, in Captain's uniform holding M1850 Staff & Field sword. Baldwin enlisted as 1st Lieutenant on Field & Staff of the 15th Mass. Vol. Inf. on 11/27/62 and was discharged for promotion to Captain in the US Volunteers Adjutant General's Dept. on 6/9/62, resigning on 4/18/63. The knife is accompanied by additional documentation of Baldwin's ownership.
A scarce and beautiful knife with a history of Civil War use.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
