44th New York Infantry Group of 20 Cartes de Visite. Twenty photographs of members of the 44th New York Infantry, also known as Ellsworth's Avengers. Elmer E. Ellsworth had been a lawyer and was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. After the attack on Fort Sumter, he raised his own regiment, the 11th NY, which were known as the "Fire Zouaves" because they were volunteers from New York's firefighters. He was the first Union officer killed during the war, killed by a civilian inn owner while removing the Confederate flag from hanging at the Marshall House. The regiment fought at such battles as Gaines' Mill, Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

Some of the subjects have been identified as follows: Capt. Charles W. Gibbs, Lt. Col. A.N. Husted, Capt. Jacob Fox, Lt. Charles Kelly, and Surgeon Morris W. Townsend. Many have backstamps from studios such as Brady's, W.H. Tarbell's, S.J. Thompson & Co., Wm. H. Abbott, W.N. Stoddard, R.W. Addis, and R.S. Avery & Co. Variations on portrait poses and designs. There is also a carte de visite of a battle-worn flag belonging to 44th NY Regiment. Some appear to have been signed by the subject or inscribed, either at the lower margin or on verso.

Condition: Varying degrees of toning and soiling. Some pencil identifying notes on verso of some. A few have slightly uneven or torn top edges. Minor wear to corners, else good.
