Description
36-Star Hand-Sewn Cotton Flag. This 70" x 36" 36-star flag was created some time after the admission of Nevada to the Union in October 1864. It is very distinctive in that it has a design in the pattern of six stars in six rows with 13 stripes. The official design, approved in July 1865, incorporated a different design showing that this is a hand-sewn flag made during the Civil War. Measuring 70" at the fly and 36" at the hoist, the 36 hand-appliquéd stars are incorporated on both sides into the 19" square blue canton. There are many small holes, especially at the fly, and stains that appear to be dried blood. At the hoist, there are several holes by which the flag was, at one time, attached to a staff. This is an overall good presentation flag in a unique pattern found only in hand-sewn wartime flags.Provenance: The Crow Art Partnership Collection
