    Description

35-Star Contract Storm Flag. The storm flag flew over forts during inclement weather and high winds. It was much smaller than the flag regularly used and designed to place much less tension on a flag pole during high winds. Originally manufactured to 10 feet x 20 feet dimensions, it was designed so that the end could be hemmed back if the flag end became worn and tattered. This flag now measures 10' x 17' indicating actual use in the field. The hoist is stamped on two sides "W. F. Scheible/ Maker./ Philad'a." There is also a small i.d. tag affixed to the hoist inscribed "Cramer". Scheible received and filled two government contracts during the Civil War for such flags. The flag is entirely hand-stitched and made of wool bunting. The stars are cut-out and applied to both sides of the canton. A rope sewn along the top indicates possible use as a street banner. There are scattered repairs, patches, holes and separation, commensurate with age. Good condition overall. The hoist has four brass grommets. 35-star flags were current from June 20, 1863, until October 31, 1864.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
