    Description

    1861 Artillery Driver's Saddle.
This saddle was used by a light, fast-moving, and fast-firing crew which provided highly mobile , especially for units. The driver's saddle was positioned on the left (or off) lead horse allowing mounted members of the artillery crew to drive horses and move the cannons, limber and caissons into place. An excellent example of the saddle ridden by the driver of a team of 6 or 8 horses (depending on the weight of the cannon). An identical example is pictured on page 221 of Time Life's Arms and Equipment of the Union.
