    Description

[Siege of Vicksburg]. Account of Vicksburg Caves by Osborne Oldroyd. Four pages, 8" x 12.5", titled "Cave Life in Vicksburg", written by Osborne H. Oldroyd, avid collector of Lincoln memorabilia, who served in Company E, 20th Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War. Handwritten account of the caves dug below the houses in Vicksburg, inhabited by the citizens during the brutal Vicksburg Campaign. Oldroyd writes articulately of the deep despair felt during those trying times. In part: "My Regiment camped for a few months in the city after the Surrender, and during the time I made the acquaintance of a young lady who lived in a cave with her parents during the siege. I visited the cave with her, and found it to be damp and moldy. The sunlight never entered it, and the four weeks she spent there she never saw the green trees, nor breathed the fresh air outside. She pictured to me the the screams and wailings of the women and children over the dead from the bursting of shells...a shell dropped through the cave adjoining hers, killing a baby that was lying asleep in bed, while another exploded before her own door, killing two colored persons that were passing." Smoothed folds, evenly toned. Minus slightly chipped edges, and a small area of loss on the first page (not affecting the text), all weakness and separation at the folds has been repaired.
