[Peace Conference of 1861]. Three Autograph Letters Signed by James Pollock. "Jas Pollock." All three in bifolium format, 5" x 8", Washington, DC, on February 5, 18, and 20, 1861, addressed to his wife. Written during the Washington Peace Conference of 1861, the final effort by the states to resolve the crisis of secession, James Pollock's letters to his wife are full of unease at the brink of his beloved nation's collapse, and his desire to stave off war between the states, and his support of lifelong friend Abraham Lincoln, shines through. In part: "I did give you my views of Lincoln's policies as found in the Tribune. They are good, & would have saved us great trouble if Buchanan had acted promptly & firmly, but now the circumstances of the country have changed & such policy now might lead to war and our total overthrow. I hope the policy of Lincoln will be wise, prudent, & peaceable. Let us avoid war, but not sacrifice truth, honor or principle." All letters lightly toned, with smoothed folds. Slight separation has occurred at a horizontal fold on one letter.
