    Description

[John Bell Hood]: 31-page Manuscript Battle Reports. 31-page manuscript, written on single sides of 8" x 13 1/4" sheets, each tipped onto a larger sheet and custom bound in a burgundy leather album titled, on the spine, "General Hood's Report". The first page is titled: "General Hoods Report of the Operations of the Army of the Tennessee. Richmond Va Feb 15, 1865". This report was originally sent by Hood to Adjutant and Inspector General S. Cooper in Richmond. The report covers operations from July 18, 1864 to January 23, 1865. This appears to be the original report, as submitted, or a retained copy. It is not in the hand of nor signed by Hood himself. It is accompanied by a photocopy of the published report. A cut-signature of Hood, beneath his portrait, has been bound into the volume. The pages are in excellent condition, save for the final page which has some insect damage and tears. The account seems to be self-serving and aims to deflect some of the criticism directed towards the general.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
