[J.E.B. Stuart] Original Pencil Drawing by Mary Custis Lee Presented to Stuart at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Circa 1854. This drawing, by Mary Custis Lee, was given to a favorite of the Lee family, Cadet James Ewell Brown "Jeb" Stuart, while Robert E. Lee served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy. It is a pencil drawing of a woman with a child in her lap and a cherub holding a cross standing by her knee and measures 4.375" x 4.75". It is signed in pencil in the lower left corner, "M. C. Lee/ June 1854". Lightly soiled, else, very fine.

Mary Custis Lee, the great-granddaughter of First Lady Martha Washington, was a woman of refinement and grace. Like most young women of her social position, she was taught domestic skills which included drawing. After her 1831 marriage to the young officer Robert E. Lee, Mary embarked on a nomadic life as an army wife with postings at Fort Monroe, St Louis, New York City, Baltimore, and West Point. It was at West Point where her husband served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy that Mary was able to practice her drawing with the young cadets and where this drawing was executed. In 1855, Robert E. Lee resigned as superintendent to join the Second Cavalry in Texas. Mary moved back to her beloved family home, Arlington House, the repository of her personal papers and drawings. Those items were lost at the outbreak of the Civil War when Federal troops seized and looted Arlington House. This charming drawing is one of the few early examples that exist in private hands. Given by Mary Custis Lee to J. E. B. Stuart
