    Description

[Fredericksburg/Chancellorsville]. Letter from Union Soldier A.B. Whiting. Twelve pages, docketed in the top-front margin, 5" x 8", Potomac Creek, VA, May 23, 1863, to his cousins. This sizable letter is teeming with details of battles fought in Virginia. He mentions his duty in the Battle of Fredericksburg, however the bulk of his account is dedicated to the then-recent battle of Chancellorsville.

In part: "We could see the shells brush and hear the thunder of the heavy guns of Hooker's Grand army over in front. It was a Splendid yet terrible sight to behold. We did not lose many men in the taking of their City...not many killed, there were a great many wounded...our wounded were not brought off the field until about Tuesday after the Battle."

Condition: Smoothed folds, with light soiling and normal toning.
