[Frank Dwight Baldwin Archive] Civil War Corps Badge Belonging To Captain Frank Baldwin, Two-Time Medal of Honor Recipient. Frank D. Baldwin (1842-1923) was a Michigan native who enlisted on September 19, 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Michigan Chandler Horse, a cavalry company. Not long after, he was commissioned into the Michigan 19th Infantry Regiment to which he would belong until the end of the war. Baldwin fought with distinction in many important engagements, but it was at the battle of Peach Tree Creek in Georgia that his actions earned him the Medal of Honor. The official citation reads: "Led his company in a countercharge at Peach Tree Creek, Ga., 12 July 1864, under a galling fire ahead of his own men, and singly entered the enemy's line, capturing and bringing back 2 commissioned officers, fully armed, besides a guidon of a Georgia regiment." We are pleased to offer many items associated with Baldwin in this current catalog, including this superb corps badge. The silver badge measures approximately 1" x 4" and consists of five suspended bars, each engraved with the engagements Baldwin participated in including (from top to bottom) the bars read: (1) "Frank D. Baldwin / Lt. Col. 19th Mich. Inft." (2) Resaca Cassville / Dallas Woods" (3) "New Hope Church / Golgotha Church" (4) "Culp's Farm / Kenesaw Mt." (5) Peach Tree Creek / Averysboro [sic] / Bentonville". The drop is approximately 1.75" in diameter and features a cloth backed voided star motif. Additional battles are engraved around the rim of the drop. They include Atlanta, Milledgeville, Savannah, Columbia, Raleigh and Stockade Stone River. Baldwin was awarded a second Medal of Honor for actions against Indians at McClellan's Creek, Texas. This is a fantastic corps badge with an exceptional association, nicely toned.
