[End of War]. Two Letters from Union Soldier N.J. Rosenburg. Each letter is four pages, bifolium, approximately 5" x 8", on Sixth Corps, 3rd Division stationery, near Richmond, VA, in April and May 27 through 29, 1865, to his wife. In his first letter, Rosenburg writes of the excitement that went through the ranks when the men heard that Lee had surrendered, and how his regiment was just fifty miles east of where he was captured. He expresses his pleasure at the thought of no longer fighting, and brags about capturing six prisoners, which he refers to as "six-foot Virginians," single-handedly. The second letter was written over the course of three days, and describes in detail his regiments trudge through the mud as they head for home. Both letters show some fading to the text, with some soiling, handling wear and smoothed folds. Includes one of the original envelopes.
