The 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio in December 1861. While some of the regiment was mustered out in October 1864, the remainder was mustered out in Nashville in December 1864, with the exception of veterans who were consolidated with the 51st Ohio Infantry. These materials were preserved by 1st Lieutenant George Day Stone, whose reports and letters can be found in this archive.
