Great Civil War hat with a superb history

Civil War Officer's Forage with Nice Period ID to Colonel, Later Major General, Joseph Hayes, 18th Mass. Inf. Neatly marked in ink with Hayes' stencil, on the underside of the 1.5" high brown leather sweatband, "Joseph Hayes/ 18th Regt. Mass. Vol. Inf." Fine quality blue wool, rising to 4.25" at the front, some minor scattered mothing but excellent. Brown polished cotton bag type lining with draw string, with brown polished cotton liner on the stiffener in the crown. Lining excellent. 0.5" wide leather chinstrap. leather adjusting loop and small brass buckle, with eagle I side buttons, excellent. Rather thick unbound leather visor with tarred finish also excellent. The hat retains the original velvet backed, gold bullion and brass sequin officer's infantry horn insignia with separately affixed false embroidered silvered brass "18" in the center.

Hayes enlisted in the 18th Mass. as a Major on August 24, 1861, doubtless the point at which he acquired this hat. He was promoted to Lt. Col. August 25, 1862, and Col., commanding the regiment on March 1, 1863. he assumed the rank of brigadier general on May 12, 1864, and was brevetted to major general March 13, 1865, for action at Weldon RR. The 18th Mass. during Hayes' tenure was one of the hardest fought of the Massachusetts regiments, through The Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, losing 123 men killed and mortally wounded. Hayes commanded a brigade in the 5th Corps from November 1863 and was wounded in The Wilderness. Hayes was captured at Weldon Railroad and exchanged in February 1865, again taking command of a brigade.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
