    Civil War Non-Regulation Staff Officer's Sword Carried by Brigadier General Nathan Goff, 37th Regiment Colored Troops 32 12" slightly curved blade with center floral and scroll etched panels, the obverse with "US" motif and reverse with spread wing eagle. Obverse ricasso stamped "W. Clauberg Solingen", the reverse with inset disc bearing the word "Prooved" surrounded by the very faintly etched name "Hostmann & Sons Philadelphia". Blade is smooth, mostly gray with areas of dark staining and minor pitting at the tip. Steel guard pierced with a spread wing eagle over the letters "US", steel is smooth and gray with minor dark staining. Grip missing 25% of its shark skin wrap and most of its wire. Steel scabbard gray with dark areas with one shallow dent 12" from the drag. Accompanying the sword is a handwritten letter from Dr. Nathan Goff attesting that this "sword was carried by my great great great grandfather Brigadier General Nathan Goff Jr. The sword has been in the Nathan Goff family since General Goff's death and was passed to me by my father prior to his death".
    Nathan Goff Jr was commissioned as a Captain in Company G 2nd Rhode Island Infantry on 6/5/61, Major 7/24/62, commissioned Lt Col 22nd Infantry Colored Troops 12/31/63, wounded at Petersburg 6/15/64, Colonel 37th Regiment Colored Troops 11/11/64 and Brevet Brigadier General 3/13/65.
