Civil War Non - Reg Officer's Sword Presented to the Color Bearer of the 77th Penna. Vol. Inf. Inscribed in delicate script between the ring mounts on the steel scabbard: "Presented to Ensign H. P. Krebs/ 77th Penna. Vols./ by the National Union League/ July 4th, 1863" Henry P. Krebs (Kreps) enlisted in the 77th Penna 9/20/61, mustering out with the regiment 9/20/64. He was slightly wounded at Liberty Gap, Tn. on June 25, 1863, and, apparently upon recovering from his wounds, was awarded the rank of Ensign as color bearer of the regiment. According to the regimental history, Company C had been designated as the unit assigned to carry the regimental colors, and numerous other gallant color bearers has been killed and mortally wounded, most notably at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tn. prior to Kebs being assigned this honorable but dangerous task. The sword is in overall fine condition, being completely untouched. The 31" blade retains most of the original luster and is extensively etched with floral/ scroll work as well as eagle with riband on the obverse and US along with arms panoplies on the reverse. Iron Proof on the back of the blade at ricasso. Multi branch hilt with deep dark untouched patina with the guard exhibiting a panoply of flags surmounted by an American eagle on shield. Quillon, pommel cap, and knuckle bow also with cast decoration. Leather wrapped grip about perfect just some minor honest wear, the twisted and single strand bass wire wrap perfect. Steel scabbard with brass mounts and throat including skull and cross bones with an American flag on the middle mount, most unusual. Mounts perfect with nice untouched patina, the scabbard also about perfect, smooth and gray with no dents or pitting, and just a few small easily cleaned spots of surface rust. A wonderful Civil War presentation sword, in desirable untouched condition, with a superb history.
