Civil War Haversack Identified to Private Augustine Campbell, U.S. 7th Infantry, Wounded at Antietam. Tar coated soldiers' haversack with full sling, the body measures about 12" x 12". All leather closing strap are present though the tip of the outer flap's strap is missing. The roller buckle is missing. The leather sling is complete but the left side where it attaches to the haversack, is broken and reinforced with tape. The canvas side of each inner flap bear inscriptions; one reading "Augustine Campbell Newburyport, Mass"; the other "Augustine Campbell 7th U.S. Infantry Band / From his mother". Included with the haversack are two CDV portraits of Campbell in uniform, one posed seated smoking a cigar; the other of him standing in his bandsman's uniform holding a trumpet. In addition to the CDVs the consignor has provided photocopies of Campbell's service records.
