    Description

    Civil War Group Identified to Private George S. Burtner, C Company, 68th Illinois Infantry. George S. Burtner enlisted on May 30, 1862 as a private and mustered into C Company (commanded by John St. John) 68th Illinois Infantry. This lot includes: (1) 1/6th plate tintype of Private Burtner posed standing in full uniform with rifle and fixed bayonet. His buttons and belt plate have been accented in gold. The image is housed in the lower have of leather-covered case which is, itself rather damaged. (2) Small 12" x 7.25" printed flag with inscribed by Private Burtner: "Lucir [?] Creek August 10th 1862 / Taking from a disabled [?] [illegible] / by Geo. S. Burtner St. Johns Co. 68 Ill." (3) Miscellaneous G.A.R. items including five G.A.R. brass cuff buttons and three jacket buttons, two G.A.R. souvenir fobs, delegate's ribbon for the Daughters of Union Veterans, CDV of Lincoln and his cabinet with an E. & H. T. Anthony studio imprint. (4) Several original black and white photographs of Burtner and his family through the early 20th Century.
