    Description

Civil War-Era Flag Owned by William Wilkins - Reportedly the Second Man to Enlist from Michigan.
40.5" x 41" cotton flag ("battle flag" format), with thirty-six gold stars painted on each side of the canton, in a 6-by-6 row pattern. The Union had 36 stars from October 31, 1864 to March 1, 1876. This flag, given it shape and the painted gold stars, undoubtedly dates from the Civil War period. Machine-stitched, with sleeve hoist and rope loops. There is some offsetting of the stars onto the stripes, some areas of light discoloration, loss to one star and some splits in the stars. Accordingly to an accompanying "Letter of Authenticity" from the "Rail Splitter", it was acquired from descendants of William Duncan Wilkins, supposedly the second man to volunteer to join the Union army from the state of Michigan. Wilkins served from the beginning of the war until August 29, 1863, when he resigned because of an injured left leg. He fought at First Winchester, Cedar Mountain (captured) and Chancellorsville (captured) and was briefly incarcerated at the notorious Libby Prison.
