    Description

Civil War Enlisted Frock Coat Identified to Private John H. Burchsted, D Company, Massachusetts 44th Infantry Regiment. Dark blue wool body with the original nine general service "eagle" buttons down the front and two at each cuff. The buttons have no maker back marks. The cuffs and the 1 ¾-inch tall (at the back) collar are trimmed with light-blue wool, as called for in regulations for infantry units. Full, slightly coarse green polished cotton lining with an inside breast pocket on each side, each lined in white cotton twill material. Stenciled in black inside the upper right white cotton twill sleeve lining is "J. H. BURCHSTED / Co.D. 44 REG. MASS." The frock coat is accompanied by a CDV of an enlisted Union soldier, standing and wearing a frock coat, with a contemporary identification on the back in pencil "44th Mass Vol". The CDV has a Fisher Photographer, Boston back mark. To be clear, the soldier in the CDV is not positively identified as Burchsted. The lot also includes photocopies of Burchsted's claim for disability, copies of his muster rolls, and a book entitled "In the Country of the Enemy", an account of service in the 44th Massachusetts published by the University of Florida in 1999. The book recounts the experiences of Corporal Zenas T. Haines experiences in the regiment.
John H. Burchsted (1839-1891) was a 23 year old native of Boston when he enlisted on August 29, 1862 as a private. He mustered into D Company of the 44th Mass on September 12, 1862. He mustered out on June 18, 1863. His pension declaration states he mustered out due to "nearly totally deaf in both ears". Whether he sustained this condition as a result of his service is unclear in the pension declaration. A nice identified Union frock coat.

Condition: Good to very good. Some light insect tracking but no real moth holes. Honest wear at the edges of the cuffs. A couple of small holes in the lining.
