Civil War Confederate Used State of Massachusetts Haversack.
White cotton body with black oilcloth back, flap and carrying strap. The haversack measures 12 x 12-inches with an integral carrying strap measuring approximately 1 1/4-inches wide and 48-inches in length. Single dished-metal button for closure.

Under the flap, stenciled in white on a black rectangle on the white cotton body is the name "H. WEST / LT. / N.C. INF." Handy H. West was a resident of Sampson County, North Carolina, who enlisted as a 3rd Lieutenant on May 10, 1861, immediately mustering into "H" company of the North Carolina 20th Infantry. He died as a result of wounds he received at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862. The inside of the haversack is possibly marked to the original owner ( presumably a Union soldier) but the name is, for the most part indecipherable.
This style of haversack is pictured on page 210 in Time Life's Arms and Equipment of the Union.

Condition: Very good. With modest wear from honest use.
