Civil War Chasseur Style Kepi with Original Cloth 2d Corps Badge. Although in rather poor condition, the unusual form and original Corps badge still make this a desirable piece of Civil War headgear. Dark blue wool body, 3¼" high at the front. The vertical seams, horizontal seam and sides retain about 60% of an original 1/8" double thickness cotton cord. Some minor moth damage and several small seam openings but quite sound. Retains the original 1½" wide, 2½" high light blue wool 3rd Division 2d Corps badge, stitched to the crown. The badge exhibits some mothing but 80% intact. Also attached to the crown with two brass wires is a ½" high silvered brass company letter K. The tarred unbound visor is tacked in place with crazing on the finish but unbroken and sound. 1 1/16" brown leather sweatband about 80% intact, somewhat tattered at the back. The cardboard reinforcing around the base and in the crown is intact and sound, but only a small piece of the brown polished cotton lining remains. The hat is in a very small size and was possibly used by a drummer. A scarce and moderately priced example of a Civil War kepi with the original Corps insignia.
