    Description

Civil War Carte de Visite Album of the 1st Conn. Hvy. Arty. Standard Civil War brown leather album with embossed decoration and brass mounts, shows some wear/ scuffing but good sound condition. The album bears the signature in the front of Gustavus S. Dana Captain Signal Corps U. S. A/ Jan 25th 1864, who was from Hartford and served in two Conn. infantry units until his appointment to the Signal Corps in January of 1864. Dana was doubtless acquainted with and served with the men in this album. Contains 25 ID'd uniformed cartes de visite of members of the unit, along with several other ID'd military images and the obligatory views of generals and other period notables. All images in fine condition. All nicely ID'd, many of them signed, in various uniforms, both officers and enlisted men, with a mix of both tintypes and CDVs. The 1st CVHA was organized from the 4th Conn. Inf. in January of 1862 and served in all major combat actions of the Army of the Potomac including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, as well as operations against Petersburg and Richmond, losing 51 men killed and mortally wounded. An historic album that has clearly been together since the Civil War.
