    Description

Civil War Caliber .44 Rimfire Henry Repeating Rifle, Serial #973. Very nice condition but in the tradition of Norm Flayderman's "basement gunsmith specials," the entire forward barrel sleeve assembly, along with the magazine spring and guide are missing. All metal smooth and clean under an old coat of clear lacquer that should obviously be removed but did an excellent job of protecting the gun over the intervening years. Where the lacquer has worn off the gun has developed a nice patina. Absolutely no rust or pitting and, under the lacquer a sharp crisp gun, including all screw heads. Mechanically perfect, excellent sharp bore, and all markings deep and crisp. An early gun produced in mid to late 1862 with rounded butt profile and ladder sight mounted on the frame with an additional factory dovetail on the barrel. Very nice wood with dark rich patina, just showing some minor wear/use with small copper and silver inlays on the right side. Obviously applied during the period of use and demonstrate the esteem in which the rifle was held. The gun still retains two of the of the original four sections of the hickory and steel cleaning rod in the butt aperture. In reality a very nice Henry rifle and a wonderful restoration project.
