    Description

Civil War Brass Stencil of Maj. Charles C. Otis, 21st New York Cavalry, Along with a Belgian Rifled Musket Captured by Him at the Battle of New Market, Virginia. The thin sheet brass stencil is 2.5" x 11" with the cut out "Maj. Charles C. Otis/ 21st N. Y. Cav." nice patina with a few obligatory wrinkles, excellent. The musket is a Belgian manufactured .69 caliber Piedmontese Model 1844/60 rifle with the maker's mark of A. Francotte. The gun is accompanied by a letter dated July 8, 1919, from Otis's son, Dr. John Otis of Albany New York, stating that the gun was taken by Maj. Otis's orderly from a dead Confederate at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, and that his father had loaned the gun, for display, to the local GAR Post in the late 1870s, the gun being returned to Dr. Otis after the post closed. The letter further states that Maj. Otis had the "rifle repaired at the Remington Arms Co.....as the top of the barrel was damaged", thus explaining the fact that the barrel is now about 2.5" short. The letter further mentions that the number 795 is on the underside of the barrel and "CSA on top" which is visible at the breech. The gun also has an old well done repair to the wood in the wrist area, which is mentioned in later letters tracing the gun's lineage. It also appears that the rear band is quite possibly a replacement. Looks fine but fit and patina are a bit off from the rest of the gun which is overall generally smooth and gray, with scattered dark salt and peppering and a few patches of very light pitting. Wood generally with nice smooth patina, the repair apparently done to repair a shattered wrist. Mechanically fine with an excellent rifled bore.

Major Otis enlisted in the 2nd New York Inf. as a 2nd Lt. on July 28, 1861, and resigned February 28, 1863. He then enlisted as a Captain in the 21st NY Cav. August 7, 1863, serving until his muster out on July 2, 1866. Otis was captured at Charles City Cross Roads, June 30, 1862, and paroled August 12. Accompanied by a complete set of records and additional letters detailing the lineage of the gun. Nice set with excellent provenance.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
